Coming Out of the Dark

August 22, 2017

"Coming out of the dark..." was playing in my head as I sat down to gather my thoughts. (A song I hadn't thought about in 15 or so years...I don't think this popped into my head by coincidence, it came to me as I begin to get settled back into working for pediatric stroke.)

Coming Out of The Dark was the first song performed and, also, the first single released by singer-songwriter, Gloria Estefan, after a near-fatal accident in 1990. It debuted at the American Music Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, on January 29, 1991.  (Many of you may not have even been born; Gloria is an all-time favorite of mine.)

I remember watching Gloria perform this LIVE, and getting chills.  As she had overcome what most believed would be the end, I recognized her fight for life, her journey to stand again, to perform, to live...  This song resonated within me because most people on this planet can relate, as they have lived in darkness - some more than others.

Point is: We all face darkness in our lives!

For years I lived with the weight of my son's stroke on my shoulders.  There were so many lessons to live and so so much life to live.  This journey not only became one I traveled with my son, but with countless people from around the globe.

The beauty of this journey is that it comes full circle and in the process I came out of the dark..again.  I say again because I have faced many of my own challenges and adversity throughout my life, before I became a mother to Brendon, a perinatal stroke survivor.

So what do the words to the song share:

Why be afraid if I'm not alone
Though life is never easy the rest is unknown
Up to now for me it's been hands against stone
Spent each and every moment
Searching for what to believe

Coming out of the dark, I finally see the light now
It's shining on me
Coming out of the dark I know the love that saved me
You're sharing with me

Starting again is part of the plan
And I'll be so much stronger holding your hand
Step by step I'll make it through I know I can
It may not make it easier but I have felt you
Near all the way

Coming out of the dark, I finally see the light now
And it's shining on me (I see the light, I see the light)
See the light (I see the light)
Coming out of the dark I know the love that saved me
You're sharing with me

I stand on the rock of your love
(Forever and ever)
Can't nobody stop me from watching
(Forever, and ever) I stand on the rock of your love
Love is all it takes, no matter what we face

coming out of the dark
I see the light, I feel love shinning on me (shining, shining)
Shining on me
Coming out of the dark I know the love that saved me
You're sharing, you're sharing with me, sharing with me, sharing with me

Coming out of the dark
Making it into the light
Your love shining on me, shining on me, shining on me
Coming out of the dark
I see the light, I see the light (I see the light)
Shining, shining, shining on me
(Shining, shining)
Coming out of the dark
I see the light now

Yes I see the light (shining, shining)

Know that in this journey of stroke and life you are not alone!

You may have to do things - therapies, decisions, doctors appointments - on your own, but you are not alone.

Gloria Estefan didn't walk again without struggling, without pain, without fear...without a TREMENDOUS fight, without a strong will and without love.

Sending love to all of you who are coming out of the dark.
